The Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu (meaning "storm dragon" and codenamed "Helen" by the Allies) heavy bomber was intended as a replacement for the out-classed Mitsubishi Ki-21 series of medium bomber. The Ki-49 was designed in response to an Army specification issued in 1938 for a new bomber to replace the Mitsubishi Ki-21 Army Type 97 Heavy Bomber, which was only just entering service. The Ki-49's role is a low-altitude medium bomber capable of destroying ground targets such as pillboxes and tanks. Although hindered by a low total bomb capacity, this aircraft is renowned for its impressive manoeuvrability. This being said, it is very easy for the Ki-49 to hover above an area and drop all of its payloads rather quickly. The Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu was intended as a much-needed replacement for the aging Mitsubishi Ki-21 Sally. However, it conferred few advantages in terms of performance, and most crews actually preferred the older machine.

The Ki-49 feels like a mix between the Ki-43 and the Ki-61 that can carry bombs. It feels manuverable like the Ki-61, but is actually slightly less than the G4M. It has a extreme climb rate like the Ki-43. And it has more armor. The G4M is extremely maneuverable but simmilar to a Zero, it feels sluggish to get into a turn.
